Making an impact

Helping the environment, creating jobs, strengthening communities

The CRNS regularly reports on the work of its members. The CRNS Membership Mapping Report 2008/09 shows that over the year CRNS members divert almost 73,000 tonnes of materials from landfill, save over 164,000 tonnes of CO2e.

Helping people, stimulating community

CRNS members help to create sustainable jobs and opportunities for local people. Their work plays a part in creating better, more equitable and just societies. The vast majority are social enterprises or community interest companies.

The CRNS Membership Mapping Report for 2009/10 shows that those CRNS members that provide economic opportunities currently employ 1,166 full time equivalent staff, and provide 1,300 training places and 2,200 volunteer places. They help upwards of 100,000 people a year, including homeless people. That’s nearly 25 people per organisation every week (or an average of 1,300 a year).

“Many people here don’t think they can be greener or they see environmental issues as an expensive option. Through Gorbals Recycles, we try to change that way of thinking. We want to challenge the perceptions of how to live a more environmental and sustainable life.”
