Moffat CAN secures £300,000 grant for 'Grow Allot' project

moffat can The Climate Challenge Fund has awarded Moffat CAN's Grow Allot project  a grant of £310,000 to refurbish the Old Church Depot, bring a comprehensive recycling scheme to Upper Annandale, and provide allotments and a community market garden for Moffat.

Moffat CAN Convenor Kris Allan said: "Grow Allot is a holistic project which covers the whole life-cycle of food, from growing, to eating, to waste, to compost, to growing again.

"Grow Allot also expands Moffat CAN's recycling across Upper Annandale, after the Council ends the blue bin collections next year, so this is a real win-win for everyone. The Council gets to reduce waste, residents get to recycle, and Annandale reduces its carbon footprint, and gets a secure, local, source of fruit and vegetables.

"This award gives us a year to turn Moffat CAN into a self-sustaining social enterprise, employing local people and offering volunteering and work experience opportunities in the Region."

Moffat CAN plans to start building work on the Old Church Depot in 2010, and will be looking for local firms and tradespeople to tender for the work. Work on turning the former Drying Green into allotments will start at the same time and it is hoped that it will be ready for springtime next year.

They intends to start recycling collections as soon as possible after the council collections stop next year, though this timetable is entirely dependent on getting final approval from Scottish Ministers, and on planning permission.
