WEEE reuse targets discussed at RREUSE meeting in FinlandJuly 8, 2009
Up for discussion was whether to lobby for European WEEE reuse targets similar to recycling, and the CRNS had an input into that. The discussion centred on what reuse targets should be and whether the targets should reflect current reuse capacity in Europe, therefore allowing us to meet those targets or if the targets should should act as a push point for greater reuse and be ambitious about what could be achieved in reuse terms i.e. 15% in the medium term. However, it was recognised that reuse is linked directly into product design and in particular durability and reusability of products. Tony Edwards, CRNS Development Officer who attended the meeting, said: "The CRNS were calling for ambitious reuse targets to be set, and that the RREUSE network should pressurise Europe for targets. There was quite a healthy discussion about that. "In terms of our role in discussions about the European waste directive and having the opportunity to explain how things work slightly different in Scotland." Pauline Hinchion, CRNS Chief Executive, also did a presentation at the meeting on the new Scotland's Zero Waste Plan, which goes out for consultation over the summer. The presentation was met with great interest from other network members, in particular the reuse targets aspect of the plan. Tony added: "The CRNS play a very central role in the reuse strategy throughout Europe," and said he was quite pleased with how the CRNS are able to represent their members on a European level." The RREUSE meeting took place in Helsinki and included visits to Bovallius-Bio Factory, who collect food waste from bakeries and shops, bus reuse business Rrebus and electronics recycler Ser. |
