200,000 Home Compost Bins Sold In Scotland

200,000 Home Compost Bins Sold In Scotland

Waste Aware Scotland’s Compost at Home campaign, funded by the Scottish Government, has reached a major milestone with the sale of its 200,000th compost bin since the launch of the campaign in 2004.

The 200,000 compost bins distributed under the scheme have diverted an estimated 84,000 tonnes of kitchen and garden waste from landfill, saving 32,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide going into the atmosphere* - the equivalent of taking almost 11,000 cars off the road for a year**.

Cabinet Secretary for the Environment, Richard Lochhead, hailed the campaign a success, “We are committed to a Zero Waste Scotland. Home composting is an excellent way of dealing with waste at the point where it arises and turning material into a valuable product for the garden. I am pleased to see the success in this area and the Scottish Government will continue to support work to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and to make valuable use of our natural resources”.

A third of Scottish households are now composting at home, according to a recent Waste Aware Scotland survey***.

The main reasons people gave for composting at home are that it’s good for the garden (59 per cent) and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill (41 per cent).***

Dr Nicki Souter, Waste Aware Scotland Campaign Manager, said “We are delighted to see that so many people across Scotland have taken up home composting. As well as reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill, composting kitchen and garden waste produces a great soil conditioner for the garden.

“Getting started is easy and there are many things that can be composted throughout autumn, including fruit scraps and vegetable peelings, tea bags, fallen leaves, egg shells and paper items which can include scrunched up cardboard, egg boxes, toilet roll tubes, and unwanted mail.“

The Compost at Home campaign plays a crucial role in achieving the wider aims of Greener Scotland to improve Scotland’s natural environment and the sustainable use and enjoyment of it.

The campaign is a partnership between WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) and the Scottish Waste Awareness Group (SWAG) and aims to get even more of the Scottish public composting kitchen and garden waste by offering discounted compost bins.

Four kinds of bins are being offered across Scotland, ranging in price from £6 to £25. Each compost bin is delivered free of charge and comes with a free kitchen caddy, to help householders separate compostable kitchen waste. Householders will also receive a ‘how to’ guide together with a composting accessories leaflet. Home composting newsletters are sent to participating households bi-annually with support and advice about home composting and valuable tips on how to get the most out of your compost bin. The newsletter also contains details about how to contact home compost advisers who can provide further support.
