Social Enterprise World Forum looking up to Down Under

The inaugural Social Enterprise World Forum, which has been a great succes, came to a close yesterday. More than 400 delegates from over 30 countries attended the Forum which was held in Edinburgh this week.

One of the higlights of the final day was Charles Leadbetter, who is a leading world authority on innovation and creativity (adviser to Downing Street and author of “Social Enterprise and Social Innovation - Strategies for the next 10 years”) who considerd many of the key issues facing social enterprises internationally.

He outlined his With principle - the need to move away from a public sector that does things "to and for" people" to a society that to work with people.

"With is a way of working – with people rather than to or for them. It is also an underlying principle of organisational design: the emerging, effective models of organisation are all based on the idea of with – networks, partnerships, collaboratives, creative communities. But the idea of with – working with, living with – has values written into it. With has a different political and social logic written into it."

"To put it crudely we are seeking to move from a world where knowledge, power, production, authority is organised in a way that is to and for people. This world of "to and for" is under growing challenge and strain."

The official closing ceremony of the inaugural Social Enterprise World Forum was hosted in the Scottish Parliament by Jim Mather, Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism and Trish Godman, the Deputy Pressiding Officer, where the World Forum "baton" was passed on to the Australian delegation.

The second Social Enterprise World Forum will take place in Melbourne, Australia in September 2009 and will be hsoted by Social Ventures Australia and the 3rd Social Enterprise World Forum will be hosted by the Social Enterprise Alliance and will take place in April 2010 in San Francisco, USA.

The World Forum, which is another world business first for Scotland, has been organised by CEiS. The Social Enterprise World Forum emerged from national social enterprise support agencies seeking a means to collaborate to advance social enterprise development throughout the world.

The Forum was the first international gathering of practitioners and support agencies dealing exclusively with social enterprise and bought together social enterprise leaders and champions from all continents to collaborate, share best practice and plan future developments. This collaboration will raise awareness of social enterprise as an expanding global mechanism for social change and will explore the merit of ongoing collaboration for key stakeholders.

The presentations, including videos of the main speaker presentations, will be available in the CEiS website in the next few weeks.
