Community Recycling on show at World Forum

Community recycling from across the globe has been on show at the inaugural Social Enterprise World Forum, which is being held in Edinburgh this week.

Community recycling features prominently during the World Forum and speakers include:

  • Laila Iskander, Managing Director of Community and Institutional Development in Egypt
  • Eric Lombardi, EcoCycle and GrassRoots Recycling Network in the USA
  • Terry MacDonald, St Vincent De Paul Lane County in Oregon, USA
  • Pauline Hinchion, from FEAT Enterprise in Fife, Scotland
  • Harri Niukkanen, from Sytrim in Helsinki, Finland
  • Iain Gulland, the former CRNS Network Director

Terry MacDonald said: “The World Forum is a fantastic opportunity for somewhat disparate organisations from around the world to gather around a common cause and to continue to seek common solutions and really move things forward.”

Delegates also heard the inspirational story of the back street recyclers of Cairo. In her presentation Laila Iskander explained that in Cairo waste is not a word – this is something that has come from the North.

The well organised but informal network of back street recyclers ensure numerous materials are removed from the streets of Cairo. The recyclers, many of whom are living in abject poverty, see these materials as valuable resources that provide them with an invaluable source of income to help alleviate the dire social situation they are in.

This includes building concrete homes, providing their children and families with better nutrition and health and also providing them with a much needed education so that they can continue to run recycling enterprises for many years to come.

The work undertaken by Laila’s organisation supports these recyclers through training and development in areas such as industrial health and safety, literacy in order to read maps and contracts, IT skills and many other aspects of daily life that we often take for granted.

The CRNS is one of the sponsor's of the World Forum and we have taken this opportunity to put together a 4 page leaflet entitled 'Community Recycling Around the World. The leaflet contains the contact details of various organisations around the world involved in promoting and delivering community waste prevention, reuse, recycling and composting and championing the Zero Waste message. The World Forum, which is another world business first for Scotland, has been organised by CEiS. The Social Enterprise World Forum emerged from national social enterprise support agencies seeking a means to collaborate to advance social enterprise development throughout the world.

The Forum will be the first international gathering of practitioners and support agencies dealing exclusively with social enterprise and will bring together social enterprise leaders and champions from all continents to collaborate, share best practice and plan future developments. This collaboration will raise awareness of social enterprise as an expanding global mechanism for social change and will explore the merit of ongoing collaboration for key stakeholders.

The presentations, including videos of the main speaker presentations including Laila Iskander, will be available in the CEiS website in the next few weeks.
