Oban furniture recycling gets a new homeAugust 25, 2008 A new furniture recycling project in Oban is about to get off the ground, aiming to help people on low incomes. Known as LORI - Lorn & Oban Reuse Initiative, it is a not-for-profit, independent community based organisation, and a partnership between Argyll & Bute Council, The Grab Trust, Shanks, and seven other organisations, many of which work with homeless, and families and individuals on low incomes. Colin MacInness, Operations Manager of Shanks, said" "We are delighted to be associated with the project and are pleased to be able to support this worthwhile initiative." The project is now advertising for a Development Officer with the right drive and experience to develop the project, now a base has been found, and start to work on realising the benefits. David Lyon, Project Manager for Quarrier Rooftops, is looking forward to the project getting started. He said: "Low-cost furniture provision is something that we have identified as needed in the area, as the cost of furnishing a new home can be outside the reach of many people. "Whilst we have strong links with organisations such as St Vincent de Paul who are able to assist from time to time, having a permanent base for recycling will be a real benefit to many people in the area". Councilor George Freeman, Housing and Communities Spokesperson, said: "Argyll and Bute Council is always happy to support partnership working within our communities, and this new project will have benefits not only to people on low incomes, but also to the wider community who will have access to good quality recycled furniture" The Mull and Iona Community Trust, commissioned the CRNS to conduct a feasibility study into the project, which provided the background information needed for the project, and with the GRAB Trust (Group for Recycling in Argyll & Bute) will be assisting co-ordination of the project with other partners. |
