Scotttish progress in recycling services

Two significant recycling best practice reports launched 14 August, by Waste Aware Scotland and Remade Scotland, reveal that Scotland has made significant progress in optimising recycling services and increasing recycling rates.

Cabinet Secretary for the Environment Richard Lochhead said: "In recent years, Scotland has been making steady progress in increasing recycling rates. However, the Scottish Government is committed to achieving a recycling rate of 70 per cent by 2025.

"Both of the reports being published today will assist in spreading best practice around the public sector as we take the essential journey towards zero waste."

The latest recyclate recovery best practice report prepared by Remade Scotland highlights:

  • The amount of recyclate collected at the kerbside has risen by 23% when compared with the 2005/06 figures;
  • Nearly 750,000 tonnes of recyclate was extracted from the household waste stream. Over 410,000 tonnes (58%) was collected at the kerbside with the remaining 42% brought to recycling centres and points by householders.

The first Waste Aware Scotland annual Recycling Advisor Support Programme Report highlights:

  • A strong link between recycling advisor interventions and increased set out rates for kerbside recycling in the majority of cases;
    Reductions in excess waste set out in areas where recycling advisor interventions have taken place.

Dr Nicki Souter, Waste Aware Scotland Campaign Manager, said: "We are delighted to be able to support local authorities in optimising kerbside recycling services through our recycling advisor training and support programme. It’s great to see the positive impact that recycling advisors are having on helping the public to increase the amount of waste that they recycle at home."
