Weedkillers may contaminate compost

compost signThe Composting Association warns biowaste processors and local authorities against weedkiller residue in compost.

The warning comes after news reports about aminopyralid and clopyralid in a range of weedkillers approved for use in the UK.

The Compost Association writes: "If present in compost, residual concentrations of herbicide active ingredients aminopyralid or clopyralid can have toxic effects on susceptible plant species.

"Risks are influenced by the proportion of affected input material in any one composting batch, how long ago the herbicide was used, and how much affected compost is used in connection with the growing of any susceptible plant species.

Redhall Walled Garden in Edinburgh experienced the problem first hand last year, when compost from an organic landscaper was found to contain weedkiller residue.

Redhall lost all their compost and a lot of their crops, and two years income.

WRAP is currently conducting a risk assessment study about the issues.
