Pupils slim their waste bins in Changeworks challengeJune 24, 2008 Pupils in seven East Lothian primary schools have been eating up their lunches and slimming the waste in their dining hall bins in an attempt to win the Changeworks Waste Free Lunch Munch Challenge. The aim of the challenge was to encourage the pupils to pack a healthy, waste free lunch, and there were certificates and £100 to the winners. Winning the competition by reducing their waste by an incredible 51% was Dirleton Primary School. Runners up Macmerry Primary School also did well by reducing their waste by 47%. Changeworks launched the competition to highlight the volume of waste generated in school lunch halls. Information recorded during the competition showed that between the seven participating schools, the volume of waste thrown out was reduced by almost 30%. Changeworks’ Education Officer, Kathleen Kirkness said: "This is a great result for all the schools that took part. "It shows how pupils are actively doing their bit to reduce the volume of food waste being sent to landfill in East Lothian and how they are helping to keep themselves and the environment healthy. The next step is to enjoy their summer with lots of waste free picnics." |
