Scottish Waste and Resources Awards 2008 open for entries

The Scottish Waste and Resources Awards 2008 are being launched today (2 June), as part of Recycle Week.

Projects across Scotland are being invited to submit entries to the annual awards, which aim to acknowledge, reward and celebrate those organisations that have shown an outstanding contribution, through best practice and innovation, to the Scottish waste, recycling and resource management sectors.

The winners will be announced at the Scottish Waste and Resources Conference and Annual Dinner which will be held that Hilton Hotel Glasgow on Wednesday 8 October 2008. The Conference and Awards are delivered by Eventful Scotland in partnership with IWM Business Services.

John Summers, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful and Chair of Eventful Scotland, said,

"As recently reported, recycling in Scotland is at an all time high and that is down to the commitment and hard work of a wide range of stakeholders across Scotland in the public private and voluntary sectors. These awards will allow some of those organisations to be rewarded for their hard work. We are looking to build on the success of previous years, when the quality of nominations has been extremely high. Coupled with the Government's commitment to moving towards a Zero Waste Scotland, we are expecting a high volume of entries and we would encourage people to get their nominations in as soon as possible."

The Awards are open for entries from Monday 2 June and all entries must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 29 August 2008. Entries can be submitted online at www.eventful-scotland.org.uk

Organisations can nominate themselves in any one of four different categories: Private Sector, Scottish Local Authority, Community Sector and the Partnership Award.

Activities that are eligible should be based around the waste hierarchy and could cover best practice and innovation in any one or all of the following areas:

  • Waste Prevention and Reduction
  • Reuse
  • Composting
  • Recycling
  • Waste Treatment and Disposal
  • Re-processing and Remanufacturing

There will also be an award presented to the Best Non-Waste Management Sector Initiative. This award will be presented to an organisation, such as a school, hotel or similar, that is not directly involved in the waste, recycling and resource management industry but which has shown a clear commitment to best practice and innovation in dealing with their waste. The entries will be drawn up from organisations nominated by the Eventful Scotland partners and other selected organisations.

All award entries will be reviewed by an independent panel of experts in order to agree the winners.
