Business plan for setting up Building Material Reuse Centre

BioRegional Reclaimed have published a business plan toolkit for Building Material Reuse Centres (BMRCs) in the UK, together with WasteWISE Consultants.
David Bryan, CRNS Development Officer, said: "Building and demolition materials represent roughly a quarter of the entire waste stream, but much of this is re-usable.
"There is a growing demand for architectural salvage as well as more mundane materials like wood, sand, bricks and so on.
"This model business plan provides a head start which can help CRNS members to develop a sustainable social enterprise that would make a big impact in terms of tonnages diverted from landfill, and provide a variety of training opportunities.
"With INCREASE Enterprise now open, the launch of this business plan is very well timed."
The toolkit includes:
- A Generic Business Plan which is intended as a template to be developed by individual projects
- A costed financial model based on the operational costs of existing UK based reuse organisations
- Potential UK product lines and income, adapted from a typical US ReStore
- Guidance appendices providing case studies and covering essential issues.
Success not guaranteed
The details provided in the generic plan have been produced with the best available data, but are not sufficient to guarantee success of locally specific BMRC. Those considering whether to set up a BMRC need to undertake a detailed site-specific feasibility study to establish whether the local potential for supply of materials, demand for sales and costs of operation can meet the requirements for a financially sustainable operation.
