Mapping Reports

Over the last few years the CRNS has undertaken various studies of the sector.

In 2005 the CRNS identified 176 community recycling organisations and projects throughout Scotland. In 2006 that had increased to over 200, with over 40 new projects and about 20 projects ceasing to operate.

There are organisations based in 31 of the 32 Scottish Local Authorities and services are provided across all Local Authority areas.

According to the 2006 Mapping Study the sector
- diverted almost 73,000 tonnes of materials from landfill
- had a turnover in excess of £26 million
- employs 1,100 full time equivalent staff
- offers over 950 training places and over 3,200 volunteering opportunities
- helps over 68,000 people
