Community RePaint Event

Wednesday 30 April, Stirling

Delegates gathered at the Tollbooth for a joint event between the CRNS and Community RePaint, an award winning UK network of 65 community-based paint reuse schemes. The purpose of the event was to give an overview of the Community RePaint network and information on setting up and running a scheme.

It proved to be a lively and informative event with lots of discussion and questions. Mark Gregory from Community RePaint provided an overview of the network and what support and advice they could provide to organisations interested in setting up a scheme.

Delegates then heard from two successful Community RePaint projects. Community RePaint Leeds is a colourful, imaginative scheme run by grassroots social enterprise Seagulls Re-use Ltd, founded by Cat Pearson and Kate Moree. Paint reuse is a core activity of the organisation with Community RePaint Leeds being officially launched in 2006. The Walled Garden based in Perth operates a range of activities including a paint reuse project to provide people with mental ill-health a safe environment for recuperation and to learn new work based skills.

Delegates had the opportunity to attend two of three workshops. John Harris from SEPA discussed the legislation and regulations surrounding setting up a scheme. Workshop attendees heard how non-hazardous, water based discarded or donated paint is classified as waste but would be deemed an exempt activity from Waste Management Licencing. Mark Gregory’s workshop focused on income generation and collections. Community RePaint are in discussions with the leading paint manufactures with a view to introducing a levy on a litre of paint which would then be distributed to help sustain the RePaint network. A full summary from this workshop will be available to download shortly. The final workshop run by Seagulls discussed the considerations when setting up a new project including resources, marketing and identifying supply and demand.

After lunch, Vicki Wren from Community RePaint covered all aspects of marketing and promotion and emphasised the important role branding plays to the success of any scheme. A range of marketing materials are available including posters, logos and templates. Please contact Vicky Wren at Vicky.Wren@resourcefutures.co.uk if you would like further information.

The day was rounded off by Sam Moir from the CRNS who gave an overview of paint reuse in Scotland and the the role it plays in meeting the objectives of the Waste Prevention Action Plan. Sam also discussed the mapping report conducted by CRNS to identify paint reuse activity in Scotland. Currently 19 organisations across Scotland operate a scheme either as a stand-alone project or as part of a range of activities they undertake.

The CRNS would like to thank Community RePaint for their support and assistance of the event. If you would like any additional information regarding setting up a paint reuse scheme please contact Sam Moir at sam@crns.org.uk or contact the CRNS head office on 01786 469002.
