Carpet Recycling Seminar 2006
In twelve months Spruce Carpets has developed into an award winning social enterprise. Sourced from household donations and commercial waste, the unwanted and ends of rolls are cleaned, trimmed, graded, packaged and sold - as simple as that. The seminar in Dundee was a masterclass in how to replicate Spruce's success but without quite such a steep learning curve. Equipment, buildings, staffing, trainees, operational models, promotional techniques, pricing and financial models were all detailed. However, this was not at the expense of Kate's clear passion for what she does; the clients helped, the waste diverted, the difference made to lives. Very rarely does anyone ever come up with a really new idea. Even more rarely does that new idea turn out to be beautiful in its simplicity that it generates almost universal support and admiration. The 'Spruce' model for carpet reuse developed in Glasgow by social entrepreneur Kate Atkinson is all of these things and much more. The Spruce model has already been applied to carpet tiles by a sister social enterprise. The 20 delegates were clearly inspired to take up the baton in their own communities. |
