Composting at Source: Helping local organisations transform organic waste into a resource
Wednesday 23rd February 2011
A lively and inspiring event was held at Glenmore Lodge near Aviemore on Wednesday 23rd February, focusing on the subject of on-site composting.
Presenters included Hugh Creighton of Susteco in Sweden, talking about their experience of operating Big Hanna in-vessel composters around the world. This was followed by Nicky Scott of Devon Community Composting Network who gave a fascinating presentation on his work helping schools, businesses and communities to compost food waste over the years. Nicky also spoke of the different small-scale composters on the market suitable for composting on site.
After a brief look at the regulations, there was a tour of Glenmore Lodge, Scotland’s National Outdoor Training Centre, including the recently installed Big Hanna in-vessel food waste composter. In the afternoon there were presentations by the Composting at School and College Project by Aberdeen Forward and Dumbarton Road Environment Trust. The day was rounded off by a presentation by Changeworks on the work carried out by the Zero Waste Volunteer Programme to promote waste prevention and home composting.
