The world creates 25 million tonnes of e-waste every year thanks to a consumer electronics industry that 'designs for the dump'. As this new seven-minute film, from the creators of The Story of Stuff points out, today's electronic goods are 'hard to upgrade, easy to break and impractical to repair'.
Things might be different, as the film suggests, if that 25 million tonnes of waste was dumped at the homes of the CEOs of electronics companies rather than developing countries. If we want our laptops, mobile phones and MP3 players, we should start demanding that companies design them to be toxic-free and designed to last.
